Brett & company did an outstanding job with what I’d consider a very challenging project. The area we chose to place our pool is extremely tight and he managed to design and execute a pool that is quite large but ties in well with our architecture and space provided without overwhelming it. There were unforeseen challenges during the build and Brett handled all of them with great professionalism. Some of these challenges were certainly customer induced and Brett was always extremely patient and understanding! Brett helped guide us through tile/stone/pool finishes and we are thrilled with the way it turned out. The weather has cooperated a few times this winter and we’ve been able to enjoy the pool a handful of times now, it’s outstanding we are so pleased. Onto landscaping that will do this pool justice!
My wife and I are “sticklers for the details”, type A personalities that both work in the professional services sector. From the moment we spent time with Brett in our house as we entertained the idea of adding a pool, partly for aesthetics and partly to enjoy as a family with young kids, we knew he was the one to deliver on our high expectations. He did not disappoint. Example – from ground breaking to water in pool – 40 days! We are now going into our fourth year of enjoy our pool with only a couple of minor issues (replacement of one breaker panel and one LED light – both taken care of within days by Brett!) that were quickly addressed. We “interviewed” three pool companies and knew immediately that Brett and Downunda were the one for us! We really appreciated that Brett took the time to understand our lifestyle, what we wanted out of the pool and our tastes. He then went away and designed a masterpiece which paired with our house so well it looked as though they’d been built together.
Beyond this, the pool was also installed on schedule and without any surprises. We had a few unusual aspects to our build which Brett and his project manager handled smoothly.

Downunda built our pool in The Woodlands 4 years ago… great design and project management. We had some minor issues since the project was finished but Brett has always been responsive taking care of them. Brett handled our pool construction with great expertise and professionalism. We started to build the pool before the home and it is partially tucked under the covered patio of the home. The logistics of that scenario made it much more involved than most builds and he handled everything. High quality. Five years in and we love our pool.

Brett created an exceptional design for our pool and back yard space, and Michael is a complete professional during execution. When people all over Houston were stuck weeks or months with muddy holes in their back yards while they awaited Gunite, Downunda dug our hole Nov 3 and blew in our Gunite Nov 6. They do what they say they are going to do and they keep coming back until everything is perfect. I have never had such a great customer service experience. Mr. Hatfield’s designs are fabulous and unlike the run of the mill designs I have seen. Your project will be unlike any other and you will be the talk of your neighborhood. We were given a schedule for the project with the idea that it could change based on weather. It shifted slightly, but we were kept in the loop the entire time. If we had questions, they were answered in a timely manner. After the project was completed, we still maintained contact. Any issues that we had were resolved in a timely manner. Brett is enjoyable to work with, doesn’t take more business than he can handle, is professional and knowledgeable, and competitively priced. He uses quality materials and products, doesn’t take short cuts and oversees all work. Overall, a great experience.

We have enjoyed our spa and backyard environment for about 18 months. When we have had a question, Brett has been quick to respond and to help. He provides good customer support after the project. He recently helped with a motor bearing problem on the circulation pump, and I was very pleased with his ownership of the project and customer service well after the project was completed.

During construction Brett was personally involved throughout the project from design to final delivery and was always attentive to detail and to our needs. Brett dealt with subcontractor issues quickly and decisively and never made a sub contractor issue ours; he always took care of them himself.
Brett completed and finished the job and did not check out at any time even when we had paid the majority of the money and there were the usual tricky final close out items. He also made sure we were 100% satisfied with completion before requesting his final milestone payment – something I have not seen from other builders.
The project was delivered on budget and schedule and Brett was very pragmatic and fair about changes. In fact despite the fact we made several changes he never formally charged us for a change order.
Overall, Downunda provide a premium service at a premium price but in my view are completely worth the investment. The service is attentive and personal. Brett is knowledgeable and constructive and knows his business.
If I had one minor comment it would be their true strength lies in pool construction and the immediate surroundings. We actually used them for a fully integrated landscaping project for our whole home. The broader landscaping was done well but is not Downunda’s core scope. If you want to do this for convenience and simplicity of project management then Downunda will do a good job for you, however, their true gift and skill lies in the design and delivery of extremely high quality pool environments and their immediate surroundings.
I researched a lot of pool companies looking for the right modern pool style I had in mind. Most pool companies in Texas generally build the traditional Texas-style pools, which was not the look we were going for. Brett has a great eye, and immediately got the pool styles we were looking for. He met with us at the house to build a 3-D design of the pool, met at a tile company to pick out tiles, and at a nursery for plants and palms around the pool. Building a pool is a bit like a roller coaster with rainy days, and so many different contractors, but Brett was very communicative during the whole process. There were quite a few specific things we had done including making it a spa+pool, salt water, water falls, and tanning deck! The pool was finished by summer time, and was perfect to lay out in all season!

Brett and Downunda provided our backyard pool and landscaping in February of 2005. As a buyer of construction services in my profession, the main trait I look for in deciding to work with a contractor again is the predictability of the delivery – particularly from a schedule and budget perspective. The experience with Brett was one where there were no unpleasant surprises. We always knew where we were in the process and the completion was right on time. In short, Downunda simply did what they said they would, which is very rare today. After the delivery, Brett was always available and even today, many years’ later returns calls when we have a question or need advice/guidance. Top notch contractor.
